OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY – I

Dear Students,
Starting from 2017 – 2018 Spring semester a new course; OHS 101 “Occupational Health and Safety –I” will be offered in our University. This document briefly gives the background of the course followed by weekly programs. Finally, course conduct and grading will be discussed.
Higher Education Law (Law No: 2547, Article 5/ı) was amended on April 23, 2015 and Occupational Health and Safety courses are listed as COMPULSORY courses for the faculties - departments whose graduates are eligible to become an OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY SPECIALIST.
5/ı) (Amended: Article 3747/1-29/5/1991) In higher education institutions, Ataturk’s Principles and History of Turkish Revolution, Turkish language, foreign language and occupational health and safety are must courses at the faculties that train and educate students who will have the capacity to become occupational health and safety specialists when they graduate in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety Law No. 6331 and dated 20/6/2012. In addition, one of the courses in physical education or fine arts are provided, which are not among must courses. All these courses are scheduled and applied for at least two semesters.
Occupational Health and Safety Law (Law No: 6331) defines the OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY SPECIALIST as:
Occupational safety specialist: any engineer, architect or technician who are authorized by the Ministry to work in the field of occupational health and safety and who have occupational health and safety expertise certificate.
This definition of OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY SPECIALIST includes all departments of Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Architecture. In addition, Physics, Chemistry and Biological Sciences departments of Faculty of Arts and Sciences are included. In that respect, all students admitted those departments by 2016 – 2017 and after will be asked to take these courses.
First of these two compulsory courses, OHS 101, is ready and will be offered for the first time in Spring 2017 – 2018 semester.
The course will be given as an ONLINE course through ODTUClass, with 14 different topics for the 14 weeks of the semester (Table 1).

SOME IMPORTANT RULES
- There is no chance to DROP or WITHDRAW the course.
- This course is a PREREQUISITE of the second OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY COURSE which is planned to be available by 2018 – 2019.
- Several departments are planning to assign this course as the PREREQUISITE of some of the courses of their program. Please pay attention on the possible changes in the program of your department.
- Course material of a given week (audio – visual materials) will be available on Monday 00:00 and will continue to be available throughout the semester.
- You will be able to reach the course material by using your METU USERNAME and PASSWORD.
- You are asked to study the course material on the scheduled week otherwise you will not be able to see the QUIZ of the week.
- You are responsible to complete the QUIZ of the given week before Sunday 23:59.
- There will be no chance to get a MAKE-UP for a missed QUIZ.
- You should notice that, the QUIZ will only be available when you complete the course material.
- Each QUIZ will contain 5 questions and have 5 % in total grading (1 point/question).
- You will be given 7.5 minutes for each quiz and you can have maximum two attempts.
- In case of second attempt, the grade of second attempt will be counted.
- Since questions are asked from a pool of questions randomly, there is almost no chance to get the same questions in two attempts.
- Total weight of QUIZES in grading is 70 %. Rest of the grading (30 %) will come from FINAL EXAM which will be held in PC labs of the University during final exam period.
